Ferris wheel is still popular and beloved by all, young and old. First Ferris wheel appeared in America in 1893, and was intended to be an engineering response to... the Eiffel Tower. In 1893, World's Fair was held in Chicago, and the ambitious enterprising Americans just had to impress the world as much as the French, who built gigantic metal Eiffel Tower for their World's Fair event.

George Washington Gale Ferris decided to outdo presumptuous Europeans with a huge rotating steel wheels attached to luxurious booths where visitors can admire the sinking heart of Chicago aerial view. At the time of it's built the Ferris Wheel was higher than the highest American skyscraper, and rotated by two steam engines with a capacity of one thousand horsepower each. The wheel consisted of 36 booths - each could accommodate 60 visitors.

Successful idea was picked up around the world, first in Britain and then in Europe. After 10 years in the world, there were more than a hundred such a Ferris wheels.
