Weird Fishes

We gathered a list of the weirdest fish in the world. Very little is known about all of them. Some species are over 30 million years old, others may be extinct tomorrow. Very interesting read...


Ambon Scorpionfish was discovered in 1856. Easily identifiable by the huge "eyebrows". Is able to change color and fade. Main tactic masking with surrounding and attacking victim.


Psychedelic Frogfish discovered in 2009. A very unusual fish - tail fin is bent to one side, and the pectoral fins are modified similar to the legs of land animals. The head is large, wide-set eyes directed forward, as in vertebrates, so fish has a "face."


Leafy Seadragon discovered in 1865. The representatives of this species are unique in that all of their body and head are covered with spikes. Feed on plankton, small shrimp, algae.


Ocean Sunfish discovered in 1758. Laterally compressed body is extremely high and short. The tail is very short, broad and truncated, dorsal, caudal and anal fins are connected. The skin of fish-moon is thick and elastic, covered with small bony tubercles. Often you can see the moon-fish lying on its side in the water. They are very poor swimmers, unable to overcome any strong current. Feed on plankton, and squid, eel larvae, salps, ctenophores and jellyfish. Can reach enormous size of several tens of meters and weighs 1.5 tons.


Broadnose chimaera discovered in 1909. Absolutely disgusting-looking jelly fish. Lives on the deep bottom of the Atlantic Ocean and eats mollusks. Almost nothing is known about this fish.


Frilled Shark discovered in 1884. These sharks resemble sea snake or eel. Frilled Shark is one of the rarest sharks in the world. Around 100 of these sharks are alive today.


Indonesian Coelacanth discovered in 1999. A living fossil, and probably the oldest fish in the world. This fish species is thought to be 30-40 million years old. Around 12, thats right 12, are alive today.


Hairy Angler discovered in 1930. Very strange and scary fish that lives at the bottom of the deep, where there is no sunlight - 1 km and deeper. Due to the special metabolism and extremely sharp teeth, they can eat just about anything, even if the victim is much bigger and stronger.


Blobfish discovered in 1926. Very little is known about this fish.


Macropinna microstoma discovered in 1939. Lives at a very great depth. Only in 2009 scientists were able to study this fish. Apparently, when trying to study it before, the fish simply could not stand the pressure change and burst. The most remarkable feature of this fish is a transparent dome-shaped shell that covers the head. What may look like a brain are actually it's eyes.
